Metals Used in Standing Seam Roof Systems
Standing seam roof systems utilize four main types of metals, each offering unique advantages. The first, and historically the most traditional, is copper. Used for centuries in dome construction following the same principles, copper standing seam roofs have become easier to apply today thanks to modern seam technologies. Copper roofing primarily consists of pure copper, making it highly durable and aesthetically distinctive.
The second commonly used material is aluminum.
Standing seam profiles made from aluminum or pre-painted galvanized steel are designed without longitudinal joints, using a clamped system supported with thermal insulation and fire resistance. These systems feature painted galvanized steel anchor plates and can be produced on-site using portable roll-forming machines, with no limitation on length—making them an ideal solution especially for low-slope and thin-profile roofs.
